My Sunshine Project
My Sunshine is a long term project which straddles the border between art and science with the purpose of creating a “copy” of the sun during the long winter in the area around the Arctic Circle.Due to rotation of the Earth’s axis, during the winter the area above the Arctic Circle keeps rotating without being exposed to the sun; in that position the sun rays do not illuminate the ground, but they pass above it. Uzunovski is researching the possibility of realizing flying structures which will reflect the sunlight in the urban areas around the Arctic Circle. The physical and psychological effects caused by the absence of natural light was the starting point for Uzunovski’s extensive research project (multidisciplinary research) that has involved astrophysicists, engineers, architects, environmentalists and social analysts, who have been invited by the artist to collaborate and work towards a “copy” of the sun itself. The most important aspect of this project is the impact on the local
population. Having the opportunity to see the sun in a period in which it was never before visible, it will not only be a strong sensation, but it will also influence their physical state on a long term basis and it’ll be another proof of how changing the environment can change our psychological state. The show in the end will be the process of realization of a utopian dream.
Solar Kitchens
Solar Kitchens by Nikola Uzunovski is a long term project in which he collaborates with artists, scientists and local communities to develop various forms of kitchens which use the sunlight as is only source of energy. Every variation is unique and made specifically for its geographical conditions and cultural context.
It blends the scientific process with the mediatic aspect of art to open a more complex experience and accent how these two spheres are connected.
This project is developed by organizing workshops and producing new variations. This process, which is a collective contribution of a multidisciplinary group, from scientists to artists, will be presented as an artwork at events that will share these ideas and approach to an audience as wide and as diverse as possible.
An Archipelago of Temporary Floating Habitats, 2023
The water levels of Prespa Lake have been declining over the last 30 years, having decreased
by approximately 313 centimeters to this day. The reasons behind these changes are dierent and demonstrated in various forms, such as increased air temperatures, decreased relative humidity, amplified evaporation, augmented cloudage, and reduced levels of sunlight, all of them not only being the result of the eects of climate change, but also of the use of water for irrigation systems by the three countries and the influx of polluting nutritional and dangerous substances.
The idea behind An Archipelago of Temporary Floating Habitats is to develop an archipelago of floating facilities intended for coexistence between people, animals and plants and make of natural materials that will be able to adopt to the water levels in case of further water withdrawals. This archipelago is composed of rafts tailor-made for people, animals and plants according to their needs, as an attempt to both support the preservation of the biodiversity of Prespa Lake and the water purification through specific plants and offer the locality as a tourist destination, thus reducing the intensity of use of the water for agricultural purposes. In this particular case, a single prototype is presented, intended only for plants and animals or for the species of birds known as terns.
The project was created in collaboration with Monozero Manufacturing and the architects Martina Peneva, Sara Ilievska, and Srna Davitkovska. Gratitude also goes to MES (Macedonian Environmental Society) and Ljupco Krstevski.
Solar clouds
Solar clouds are hot air balloons which use only the solar light to generate lift. They a constructed of three layer envelope to accumulate and preserve the energy inside.
The artificial clouds can be used to create suitable micro-climate in extreme weather conditions and become a social attractor.
The alien
In the last decade Skopje experienced a major remake, from a city which was a symbol of progress and international solidarity, became a symbol of regress and narrow mindedness.
The extreme nationalist policies required destruction or erasure of any symbol of modernism, progress and rationalism, replacing it with kitsch and pseudo-antique architecture. The best examples of Modernist and Brutalist architecture were covered with classical columns and ornaments made from expanded polystyrene. One of the buildings that escaped this terrible process was the Opera and ballet, most probably because of its irregular shape and incompatibility with the classical standards.
“The alien” is a model of that building, flying as a spaceship in the sky, remaining a symbol of freedom and progress in a society that became blind to its future.
Solar airship
A development project which aim is to realise solar powered airship which uses only natural sustainable energy
to generate lift and propulsion.
Love the future
“LOVE THE FUTURE”, is a banner, an advertisement, but not of an object, nor of a service, but instead of a time.
A time for which all hope is lost. It brings back the idea of a better future, and the possibility of involvement in a
process of realization of one’s dreams and realities.
